Montgomery County, Maryland, is considering doubling the current wholesale price tax rate on e-cigarettes to 60%.
If approved, the new tax rate will take effect from July 1. The current 30% tax rate was approved in 2015.
Tom Hucker, chairman of Montgomery County Council, said: "we are the public health leader in Montgomery County. It is understood that the new tax rate is also the highest tax rate for aerosol products in the United States. I'm glad that our policy can guide other counties. The program has been successful in increasing revenue from public health programs, offsetting the taxpayer costs associated with e-cigarettes and tobacco use. "
However, at the tax public hearing, Bruce bereano, representative of the Maryland tobacco and confectionery Distributors Association, said that only Maryland has the legal right to tax tobacco products.
