Members of the City Council of Columbia, Missouri, will review the Missouri Health Commission’s report on banning flavored e-cigarette products in order to reduce the number of e-cigarettes among youth in Boone County.
According to the agenda memorandum, the Health Commission began to study the problem of youth e-cigarette smoking and its impact on physical and mental health in October 2019. According to ABC17 reports, the committee has now sent a report to the council, requesting assistance in preventing young people from smoking e-cigarette news.
The report details three recommendations that can help reduce youth smoking e-cigarettes, including zoning restrictions on e-cigarette stores, because e-cigarette stores can currently operate near schools. Health officials also recommend banning flavored e-cigarette products, as more than 15,000 flavors of e-cigarettes are currently sold.
The committee also recommended that the council explore higher taxes on e-cigarette products to increase costs and hope to reduce the use of young people. A number of studies have found that the fragrance ban actually promotes the use of tobacco and e-cigarette products by young people.
A vote on the report is not expected on Monday night.
