The Canadian Electronic Cigarette Association wants the government to end the proposed seasoning ban

The Canadian government has proposed to restrict flavored e-cigarette products, and Health Canada admits that this will lead to an increase in the number of combustible cigarettes. According to the Canadian Electronic Cigarette Association (CVA), the reason for the ban is that flavor restrictions will reduce the rate of e-cigarettes among young people. However, the youth rate has been declining.

The 2020 Canadian Tobacco and E-cigarette Survey found that the number of young people smoking e-cigarettes has declined since 2019. At present, the daily proportion of e-cigarettes among young people is 4.7%, and Health Canada expects that the recently implemented nicotine ceiling will further reduce use and experimentation.

"The rate of daily e-cigarette smoking and addiction among young people is actually very low, and tobacco control experts expect this situation to continue to decline." CVA Executive Director Darryl Tempest said. "Generally speaking, young people who have tried e-cigarettes in the past 30 days Quantitative data discusses the rate of e-cigarette smoking among young people. This is a poor indicator as a basis for regulation because it represents experimentation rather than habitual use. This number includes young people who have tried e-cigarettes at a party. These surveys It is also misleading because they include the age of the majority of respondents. If these respondents are excluded from the survey, the proportion of minors who use e-cigarettes every day is about 2%."

A press release stated that if other adult products receive the same attention as the use of e-cigarettes in the past 30 days, then both marijuana and alcohol will need to be strictly restricted, because the prevalence of daily and past 30 days is higher than that of nicotine e-cigarette use .

"Alcohol is much more harmful than nicotine e-cigarettes. Although the use of alcohol is more common among young people than e-cigarettes, taste restrictions have not been considered. This may be because like e-cigarettes, young people drink alcohol for taste. Canada has set a goal of reducing the prevalence of tobacco use to 5% or less by 2035. Restricting taste will prompt thousands of e-cigarette users to re-smoker and endanger current smoking reduction goals.”

CVA called on Health Canada to abandon the fragrance ban and instead focus on effective methods, such as strengthening law enforcement and education programs.
