Cancer Research UK: There is no evidence that e-cigarettes can cause popcorn lungs

In the UK, e-cigarettes may soon be prescribed by doctors to curb smoking.

Although the regular use of e-cigarettes is not completely safe, the hazards of e-cigarettes are less than that of tobacco products such as cigarettes.

The health problems caused by smoking are well documented. Approximately 78,000 people die from smoking every year.

It can also be the cause of other debilitating diseases and health problems (such as heart disease and stroke).

It is hoped that the shift to e-cigarettes will reduce their heavy dependence on tobacco, but this has caused some people to worry about its effects on one’s health.

Some people believe that the product is related to a health condition commonly known as popcorn lungs. So will e-cigarettes cause popcorn lungs?

There is currently no evidence that there is a direct link between e-cigarettes and popcorn lungs.

Cancer Research UK explained: There is no good evidence that e-cigarettes cause a lung disease called popcorn lung. There are no confirmed cases of popcorn lung among people who use e-cigarettes.

However, some e-cigarettes contain a chemical called diacetyl, which gives the product a buttery taste and is related to popcorn lungs. This is the origin of the rumors.

In addition, since 2016, the United Kingdom has banned the use of diacetyl in e-cigarette products. When talking about the popcorn lung rumors, the government stated that the UK prohibits the use of diacetyl as an ingredient in e-cigarettes and e-liquids.

"It has been detected in some e-liquid flavoring agents in the past, but its content is hundreds of times lower than cigarette smoke. Even at these levels, smoking is not a major risk factor for this rare disease."

In essence, there is not enough knowledge yet to establish a direct link.

The Cancer Research Center said: E-cigarettes are a relatively new product-they are not without risks, and we do not yet know their long-term effects. We strongly recommend that people who do not smoke use them. But research shows that e-cigarettes are less harmful than smoking and can help people quit smoking.

The official name of popcorn lung is bronchiolitis obliterans.

The name popcorn lung comes from a case of high exposure to diacetyl experienced by a popcorn factory worker.

Diacetyl is not the only hypothetical cause of popcorn lung. People who are more likely to be infected may have been exposed to hydrochloric acid, chlorine, ammonia, and nitrogen oxides.
