Recently, the Cochrane Collaboration (Cochrane), an international authoritative academic organization for evidence-based medicine, pointed out in its latest review report that 61 professional studies conducted on 16,759 adult smokers around the world proved that, E-cigarettes have the effect of smoking cessation, and the effect is better than nicotine replacement therapy, nicotine-free e-cigarettes and other methods.
Founded in 1993, Cochrane is the most authoritative independent evidence-based medical academic organization in the world. Evidence-based medicine emphasizes that medical decision-making should be based on the best scientific research evidence. Therefore, evidence-based medicine research will not only conduct large-sample randomized controlled clinical trials, systematic evaluations, and meta-analysis, but also divide the level of evidence obtained according to standards, which is very rigorous.
At present, many smokers choose to use e-cigarettes to reduce smoking or quit smoking, but some public health organizations and policy makers have doubts about the effectiveness and safety of e-cigarettes to quit smoking. To this end, members of the Cochrane Tobacco Addiction Group have been updating summary reports from time to time based on research conducted by international authoritative institutions, in order to provide decision makers in various countries with the fastest and most comprehensive e-cigarette information to determine whether e-cigarettes can be used. Whether to help people quit smoking, and whether it is safe to use e-cigarettes.
The main authors of this report include 12 experts and scholars including senior researcher of the Oxford University Evidence-Based Medicine Center, director of the Evidence-Based Medicine PhD Program, and editor of the Cochrane Tobacco Addiction Group) amie Hartmann-Boyce.
The report concluded that there is evidence that, compared with nicotine substitution and nicotine-free e-cigarettes, more people have successfully quit smoking for more than six months after using nicotine e-cigarettes.
The report pointed out that the effect of using nicotine e-cigarettes to quit smoking is better than other methods.
Specific to the data, for every 100 people who use nicotine e-cigarettes, 9 to 14 people can successfully quit smoking; using nicotine replacement method, 6 people can quit smoking, and use nicotine-free e-cigarettes, 7 people can quit smoking: if you don't use smoking cessation methods Intervention, direct smoking cessation, only 4 out of every 100 people can quit smoking successfully.
The report also highlighted that after referring to a number of tests, no evidence that electronic cigarettes are harmful to humans has been found.
The author pointed out that some people who use nicotine e-cigarettes may experience discomfort, such as mouth and throat irritation, and cough, but as people continue to use nicotine e-cigarettes, these effects will also decrease over time. Considering many international studies, in addition to Cochrane, many authoritative medical academic organizations have also managed to draw similar conclusions. For example, in 2019, an independent study by University College London pointed out that 50,000 to 70,000 smokers in the UK use e-cigarettes to quit smoking every year.
Since the establishment of the project in 2012, this is the fifth update of Cochrane's review report related to e-cigarette smoking cessation effects. Since the first update on December 17, 2014, all reports indicate that e-cigarettes have smoking cessation effects, and The effect is due to other smoking cessation methods.
As a representative of an independent medical academic organization, Cochrane has insisted on updating the review report for many years, which is undoubtedly sending a signal to policymakers of various countries that "e-cigarettes can be promoted as a smoking cessation tool". The United Kingdom, which has always adhered to evidence-based decision-making strategies, has become one of the countries with the fastest decline in smoking rates in the world because of the promotion of e-cigarettes as a tobacco control tool based on scientific research.
