American Council of Science and Health: The Nth study shows that e-cigarettes help smokers quit smoking

Blue Hole New Consumer Report, December 23 news, according to foreign news reports, American Science and Health Commission expert Cameron said that a high-quality study showed that e-cigarettes can help smokers permanently quit smoking, but the media did not seem to notice . why?

If you are a smoker trying to quit deadly habits, another high-quality double-blind clinical study suggests that e-cigarettes may be your best choice. Writing in Nicotine and Tobacco Research last month, the authors summarized their findings this way:

When smokers seeking to reduce smoking try electronic nicotine delivery systems, few can quit smoking in the short term. However, if smokers continue to use electronic nicotine delivery systems and cigarette-like nicotine delivery, a greater proportion of people will switch to electronic nicotine delivery systems altogether compared to placebos or cigarette substitutes.

To briefly review the results, a total of 520 adult smokers who did not want to quit were randomly divided into one of four groups for a period of six months. Participants used eGo e-cigarettes or cigarette-shaped tubes containing 0, 8 or 36 mg strength nicotine liquid as a cigarette substitute (CS). Participants self-reported daily cigarette consumption, and researchers measured exhaled carbon monoxide (CO) during regular visits throughout the study period.

By the end of the experiment, 14 of 130 smokers (10.8%) in the 36 mg nicotine group had quit, while 6 of 130 smokers in the 8 mg nicotine group (4.6%); at 24 weeks, in the 0 mg group 1 out of 130 persons (0.8%) and 4 out of 130 persons (3.1%) in the CS group were banned.

Some observations are in order:

Although the smoking cessation rate is relatively low, no one in the study actually tried to quit smoking. Nonetheless, "we have noticed that the number of people receiving high-nicotine delivery electronic nicotine delivery systems to quit smoking is gradually increasing," explains lead author Jonathan Folz, professor of public health sciences at the Pennsylvania State University School of Medicine. Compared with anyone else in the study, this group of people did not smoke longer.

No serious adverse events related to e-cigarettes have been reported within six months, which undercuts previous claims that the so-called dual use of cigarettes and e-cigarettes brings unique health risks. It also shows that anti-e-cigarette organizations like the Truth Initiative are hyping the dangers of nicotine in e-cigarettes.

Finally, the researchers monitored the ENDS equipment and nicotine fluid used by the participants. This may seem like a trivial detail, but it allows the study authors to establish a clear dose-response relationship between e-cigarettes and smoking cessation. Most of the studies we reviewed recently cannot measure how often a person smokes e-cigarettes or how much nicotine they consume, which means their results provide little insight into the health effects of e-cigarette use.

This leads us to an important concluding observation. Since September, a small number of studies linking e-cigarettes to harmful effects such as increased risk of stroke, bone damage, and depression have received extensive and favorable media coverage. In contrast, higher-quality research (including this research) that determines the risk of e-cigarettes is generally not noticed by the media.

When these studies are actually reported, reporters tend to distort the results. As a recent paper shows, e-cigarettes suffer far less mitochondrial damage than smokers. Our own Dr. Chuck Dinerstein is one of the few authors who correctly reported the results of this study. In my opinion, the only possible explanation for this difference is media bias or the desire to draw attention to explosive but scientifically dubious news articles. Neither of these explanations spoke well to reporters.
