Most Malaysian e-cigarette users believe e-cigarettes and cigarettes should not be subject to the same regulation

Most Malaysian e-cigarette users have expressed support for the introduction of e-cigarette regulations in Malaysia.

Ninety percent of them said any regulations for e-cigarettes would have to be different from traditional cigarettes.

84% of e-cigarette users believe e-cigarettes are a less harmful alternative to traditional cigarettes.

These findings come from a recent poll commissioned by the Malaysian Vaping Alliance (MVA), a local e-cigarette consumer advocacy group.

The poll, which was open to the public for nearly a week, saw some 1,000 vaping users share their views on vaping regulations in Malaysia.

MVA chairman Khairil Azizi Khairuddin explained that despite growing independent evidence that vaping poses risks, which are much less harmful than smoking, the government continues to group vaping products with traditional cigarettes.

He said the products could not possibly be any different from each other, and their investigation proved that the vaping community in Malaysia agreed.

Vape has already improved the lives of millions of smokers globally and locally, and if regulators develop a differentiated and evidence-based framework, we can continue to maintain that traction.

Regulations must strike a balance between ensuring that vaping products are available to smokers who want to switch to less harmful alternatives and ensuring that these products are not marketed or sold to young people, Khairil said.

The MVA's findings also show that e-cigarette consumers want regulations that are consistent with their use and preferences.

For example, 79% of e-cigarette users said they use vaping liquids that contain 40 to 50 mg of nicotine. If regulations limit nicotine levels below that threshold, 85% said they would resort to buying unregulated vaping liquids.

He noted that unregulated vaping liquids are not subject to any quality and safety standards.

In addition to creating a black market for vaping products, this situation could also adversely affect the safety of vaping consumers if they opt for unregulated products.

Khairil said Malaysia is at a critical point in developing regulations that benefit consumers.

We are now in a very critical position as we have the opportunity to develop a set of regulations that will not only benefit the economy but also meet the needs of the growing local vaping community of over one million Malaysians.
