A spokesman for the Irish Vaping Association believes that the taste of e-liquid is crucial for e-cigarette users. Flavored nicotine products should not be restricted under the new legislation.
Members of the Irish Vaping Suppliers Association (IVVA) will debate tomorrow.
The Joint Health Committee will meet tomorrow, Tuesday, February 15, with representatives from the IVVA to conduct a pre-legislative review of the overall package of the Public Health (Tobacco and Nicotine Inhalation Products) Act.
The proposed legislation would ban the sale of e-cigarettes and products that inhale tobacco and nicotine to those under the age of 18. It would also ban the sale of such products to those under the age of 18.
Cathaoirleach Seaán Crowe Commission said: "The Commission begins its pre-legislative review in November 2021 and we will be hearing from a number of stakeholders over the next few months.
The committee had previously heard concerns from the Irish Heart Foundation that youth smoking rates had risen for the first time in a decade due to the "explosive growth" of e-cigarettes in that age group.
The Health Research Council study found that teens who vaped were five times more likely to smoke because of the gateway effect. We welcome the opportunity to discuss these and other related matters with representatives.
An IVVA spokesperson believes that the taste of e-liquid is crucial for e-cigarette users.
The IVVA will say it is deeply concerned about the negative impact a flavour ban could have on tobacco harm reduction and consumer choice.
The main argument in favor of banning flavored e-liquids is the potential risk of using child-friendly flavors and packaging to make vaping products more appealing to minors. The association between e-cigarette flavor and subsequent initiation of smoking has not been proven.
Banning flavored e-liquids would also go against consumer interest. IVVA members observe daily that the choice of e-liquid flavors is one of the reasons adult smokers are encouraged to switch to e-cigarettes. IVVA will tell the committee.
