New Zealand health groups call for a ban on vaping shops around schools

A New Zealand health lobby has called for a ban on vaping shops within a kilometre of schools.

The number of retailers of vaping products has exploded in recent years, amid concerns that more and more students are vaping.

The industry is growing at a record rate, which is causing concern.

There are now more than 700 e-cigarette specialty stores across New Zealand; by comparison, there are fewer than 300 KFC and McDonald's stores nationwide.

While vaping was originally intended as an alternative to traditional tobacco, young people are now starting to develop the habit.

A recent survey of 19,000 secondary school students found that daily e-cigarette use among tenth graders increased from 3.1 percent to 9.6 percent in the two years to November.

Teens obviously have easy access to vaping products, as some vaping shops are located close to schools.

On a certain street, there are two stores selling vaping products at the same time, and across the street is a high school.

Health lobby groups therefore want the government to pass legislation to ban vaping shops from being located within 1km of schools.
