Jamaica to impose restrictions on e-cigarette and other tobacco marketing and ban sales to children

Jamaica's Minister of Health and Wellness Christopher Tufton said Jamaica will consider comprehensive legislation in the House of Representatives to address the devastating effects of tobacco and e-cigarette consumption in Jamaica.

Tufton said the Tobacco Control Act of 2020 would impose restrictions on the marketing of e-cigarettes and other tobacco products and ban sales to children.

According to Caribbean Weekly, Tufton said the legislation is currently at the committee stage, and I'm happy to report that we've come a long way in the process.

"I expect to introduce a comprehensive bill in the next month, maybe six weeks, and I urge my colleagues to pass it quickly to protect the people of Jamaica and reduce the cost of treatment," he said.

Outlining some of the provisions of the bill, Tufton informed that, in addition to restricting the marketing of tobacco products and banning sales to children, it would ban the use of electronic nicotine delivery systems such as e-cigarettes in public places.

According to vape shop owners on the island, more and more Jamaicans are embracing e-cigarettes to help quit combustible products.
