UK may soon officially recognise e-cigarettes as a safer alternative to cigarettes

The UK may officially authorise e-cigarettes as a drug to help smokers curb addiction. The move is in line with the British Medical Association's view of minimising the harmful effects of tobacco consumption.

The country is currently reviewing its "Smoke Free 2030" plan, which aims to make the UK a smoke-free country. The review, commissioned by the Ministry of Health, is expected to recommend the use of e-cigarettes as a less harmful alternative to tobacco.

The UK is one of the first countries in the world to develop a tobacco harm reduction strategy. Despite many efforts to curb cravings, tobacco remains the single largest cause of preventable disease and death in the UK. Tobacco addiction is especially prevalent in poorer parts of the country.

In 2019, it was estimated that at least a quarter of all cancer deaths were caused by smoking. The UK government has been encouraging e-cigarettes as an alternative to smoking since 2017, hoping the country will develop its own tobacco control strategy.

While health professionals remain opposed to any form of nicotine use, the view is that e-cigarettes are far less harmful than cigarettes, which kill about 7 million people a year.

Javid Khan, who led the review in the UK, hinted that the report would promote e-cigarettes as an alternative, saying he was considering a range of key interventions with the greatest impact.

He also mentioned that he sees the promotion of e-cigarettes as a less harmful alternative.

The British Medical Association has also proposed licensing e-cigarettes and e-cigarettes as medicines so doctors can recommend them to those who want to quit smoking.

If such proposals are approved, it could be based on a growing body of research showing the effectiveness of e-cigarettes in helping people quit smoking.
