Legal experts comment on FDA's possible ban on sale of Juul e-cigarettes

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is preparing to order Juul Labs Inc. to withdraw its e-cigarettes from the U.S. market, a move that could be announced as early as today.

If enacted, the ban would follow a nearly two-year review of data provided by Juul Labs, which seeks to authorize its tobacco and menthol-flavored products to remain on the U.S. market.

John F. Banzhaf III is a professor of public interest law known as the Ralph Nader of the tobacco industry. He issued this response to news that the FDA may announce a ban on e-cigarettes.

The law professor leading the fight says the U.S. will eventually ban many e-cigarettes.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is reportedly preparing to ban the sale of Juul e-cigarettes in the United States.

The proposal was cheered by law professors who first led the crackdown on e-cigarettes, helped ban vaping in many public places, and required many companies to stop doing business with their manufacturers.

Juul is one of the most dangerous e-cigarettes because it is so popular with children because of its fruity and trendy marketing, said John Banzhaf, a professor of public interest law, who raised questions about these new nicotine-delivery devices many successful complaints.

As the FDA and numerous public health organizations agree, e-cigarettes tend to attract teens and cause them to become addicted to the drug nicotine; an addiction that can lead them to start smoking.

Banzhaf said the product could also deter current smokers from quitting because it could keep them addicted to nicotine even when smoking is banned in the workplace.

While e-cigarette proponents claim the product is useful because it helps smokers quit, many experts and government organizations don't believe the evidence supports this claim,

Another problem is that if e-cigarettes are allowed to be used in workplaces and public places, innocent people around them are exposed to nicotine and other dangerous chemicals.
