The head of the Vaping Association of South Africa (VPASA) said that despite scientific evidence that vaping is less harmful than smoking, the booming industry is plagued by persistent misinformation and disinformation.
According to a report by IOL, Asanda Gcoyi, CEO of VPASA, said that e-cigarettes are the only and most effective tool to free smokers from their deadly addiction to cigarettes.
"Our acceptance of e-cigarettes is not without risks, but it is a potentially less harmful alternative to smoking. What we cannot do is unduly hinder this technological innovation, which may be the only way to free smokers from their deadly addiction to cigarettes. most effective tool," she said. "We have a shared responsibility to share the right information about e-cigarettes and other less harmful alternatives to smoking so smokers can make informed decisions about their health."
In an ongoing effort to clarify and demystify vaping in South Africa, VPASA is working to finally debunk some of the most prominent vaping myths circulating, Gcoyi said.
The first rumor is that e-cigarettes are just as harmful as smoking.
“While not without risks, e-cigarettes are a potentially less harmful alternative to combustible tobacco. People who switch from smoking to vaping have significantly lower levels of exposure to harmful chemicals than those who continue to smoke,” she says. "Science going back to 2015 suggests that e-cigarettes are a less harmful alternative to smoking, and recent updates continue to support this."
The second rumor is that vaping can cause popcorn lung.
"According to Cancer Research UK, popcorn lung (bronchiolitis obliterans) is a rare lung disease, but it's not cancer," Gcoyi said. "It's caused by the buildup of scar tissue in the lungs, which blocks the flow of air. E-cigarettes don't cause a lung disease called popcorn lung."
There's also a rumor, Gcoyi said, that e-cigarettes can cause lung cancer.
"The truth is that burning tobacco in all its forms means exposure to cancer-causing chemicals. If you're a smoker, switching to e-cigarettes can reduce your risk of cancer. There are no major risk factors for nicotine and non-nicotine delivery systems in ENDS aerosols," she said. Most toxins produced by smoking. An electronic non-nicotine delivery system (ENDS) is a device that consumes nicotine, which is less harmful than consumption through burning tobacco. Coffee is brewed for caffeine. E-cigarettes are vaping e-liquids For nicotine. Both caffeine and nicotine are harmful if burned.”
