NEW YORK (Reuters) - The latest generation of e-cigarettes — often sweetened disposable devices — now account for one-third of U.S. retail e-cigarette sales, up from less than 2 percent three years ago, Reuters reported.
The findings show for the first time that consumers spent more than $2 billion on e-cigarettes in the past year.
The Reuters findings come from a dataset provided by Chicago-based market research firm IRI, which uses scanner data and other information to track retail purchases.
The IRI dataset, which measures purchases from January 12, 2014 to June 12, 2022, provides a rare demonstration of the rise of single-use flavored nicotine devices after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) cracked down on Juul Labs Inc. . Juul Labs Inc. is 35 percent owned by Marlboro maker Altria Group Inc.
The data was shared with Reuters by an individual outside IRI who declined to be named. An IRI spokesperson said the company cannot confirm any information you receive from outside sources and that data should not be attributed to IRI.
Here are the top-selling single-use flavor brands in the U.S. and their parent companies based on estimated annual sales from June 20, 2021 to June 12, 2022, according to the data.
Representatives for seven of the top 10 best-selling brands did not respond to messages seeking comment on retail sales figures. A representative for Breeze Smoke, which owns two of its best-selling brands, declined to comment.
Darrell Suriff, chief executive of Pastel Cartel, which makes the Esco bar, told Reuters that the Esco bar sold more than $300 million last year to dealers and the 33 retail stores he owns. Suriff said he believes the data showing Esco bar retail sales of $82 million is indeed skewed and does not include the full picture of sales.
