The Foster City, Calif., city council introduced an ordinance to ban the sale of flavored e-cigarettes and tobacco products, citing concerns about potential lawsuits. A parliamentary committee voted 2-2 to approve the proposed ordinance ban.
According to the Daily News, MP Sam Hindi avoided the question because his company sells tobacco products.
Assemblyman Patrick Sullivan wants to sue the project because some tobacco retailers have sued cities like Palo Alto for the ordinance. However, Forest City staff said no lawsuits have succeeded in overturning the ordinances.
San Mateo County and cities like Half Moon Bay, South San Francisco, Burlingame, San Carlos, San Mateo and Redwood City have banned the sale of flavored tobacco, and several other cities are considering bans.
The state is also involved in Senate Bill 793, which was signed into law in 2020 and requires tobacco retailers not to sell flavored tobacco products. However, its implementation has been suspended due to a referendum calling for its repeal. In the November election, California voters will vote to pass or repeal Bill 793.
