On Thursday, Alaska Gov. Mike Dunleavy vetoed Senate Bill 45, which would expand excise taxes on non-cigarette tobacco products to include e-cigarettes.
The bill would impose a 35 percent tax on vaping products. There are currently no taxes on e-cigarettes in Alaska. The American tax reform group ATR would like to commend Governor Dunleavy for defending Alaska's taxpayers while improving public health in the process.
Tim Andrews, director of consumer affairs at ATR, said: "Governor Dunleavy's decision to veto the bill is a relief to Alaskans who rely on vaping products to stay away from deadly combustible cigarettes.
“Rejecting the tax hike will also make it easier for those who currently smoke to quit using vaping products. We know that many people who smoke are low-income. Raising the price of products proven to be 95% safer than smoking, and getting smokers to quit The most effective way to do this is unconscionable. Governor Dunleavy's veto is necessary and very appropriate."
"As a proud signatory of the ATR Taxpayer Protection Pledge, Governor Dunleavy has pledged to voters to oppose all tax increases. This veto is a testament to his dedication to Alaska taxpayers, and we applaud this pro-science, pro-taxpayer decision.
