Retailers and consumers have been warned that potentially dangerous counterfeit disposables flooding the UK market are produced in dirty Chinese factories without manufacturing licenses and with no regard for product safety.
ELFBAR said that since the anti-counterfeiting operation was launched in June 2021, it has cracked down on more than 120 counterfeit production and sales targets such as factories, warehouses, logistics, and foreign trade companies, and seized more than 2 million counterfeit ELFBAR finished products, millions of packaging boxes, Anti-counterfeiting codes, semi-finished products for cigarette pipes and other accessories.
Victor Xiao, CEO of ELFBAR, said: "Consumers will be shocked if they see the conditions in which these products are manufactured, and rightfully so. The criminals behind these counterfeit products have no concern for product safety or the health of consumers, and they cut into every corner to maximize their profits.
"Frankly, the conditions in these factories are absolutely filthy and the workers operate the production lines in filthy conditions with no regard for hygiene."
Mr Shaw said ELFBAR would not stand idly by while counterfeiters ravaged the industry, damaging the reputations of established manufacturers and putting the health of consumers at significant risk.
He added: "Retailers face a huge risk when dealing with these products and they must be avoided at all costs. Because these products have not undergone any safety checks or official testing, there is no way of knowing what health risks they pose and our fear is that they could be very dangerous.
ELFBAR is cracking down on the illegal vaping market and building an intelligence profile of counterfeit products as counterfeiters get smarter and more efficient. While ELFBAR works hard to stop fraudsters at source, it realizes that it is impossible to stop all fakes from passing through, and now warns retailers that they are the last line of defense in protecting consumers.
Mr Xiao added: "While it is difficult to distinguish genuine and fake products based on appearance alone, there is no reason for any retailer to sell counterfeit ELFBAR products. Retailers can scan the code on the packaging to check the authenticity of the product and we urge them to do so with every product they sell. Combating counterfeiting is a top priority for ELFBAR, and we maintain zero tolerance for these counterfeit e-cigarettes across the industry. The UK market is very important to us and we will continue to do everything we can to ensure UK consumers have confidence in their vaping products.
As part of the fight against counterfeit e-cigarettes, ELFBAR is running a campaign to educate retailers and consumers about the threat posed by counterfeit manufacturers. During the event, ELFBAR released a video showing its real production process, showing how they control product quality by scanning anti-counterfeit QR codes to avoid buying fakes.
John Dunne, Director General of the UK Vaping Industry Association (UKVIA), commented: "I applaud ELFBAR for stepping up to fight counterfeiters. They pose a significant risk to the harm reduction reputation of the global vaping industry. That's why we're calling on the UK's retail licensing scheme to prevent the sale of illegal products, with fines of at least £10,000 for each retailer breaking the law in this way. Likewise, counterfeiters and those who trade counterfeit e-cigarettes up the supply chain need to be dealt with somehow by the relevant authorities to stop them from doing it again.
Lee Bryan, managing director of compliance specialists Arcus Compliance, commented: "Counterfeiters are the worst in any market. However, while fakes are extremely difficult to spot, distributors, wholesalers and retailers need to have systems in place to ensure they are doing all the right checks. Any lack of inbound product monitoring can allow counterfeits to enter the supply chain and pose a very real risk to the health of consumers and their own reputation.
