The Dutch government will ban the sale of fruit and other flavored e-liquids for use in e-cigarettes from next October, with the exception of tobacco flavors, broadcaster NOS reported on Thursday.
From that day on, stores may only sell the tobacco-flavored liquid, rather than what experts say is the sweeter flavoring, which has been encouraging young people to pick up the habit.
Additionally, e-cigarette packaging may no longer use photos or terms that imply the product contains something other than tobacco, such as bad boy fuel or OMGin. Esther Croes, from addiction clinic Trimbos, described the ban as a step in the right direction.
She said: "Sweet flavors make e-cigarettes and vaping use particularly attractive to young people.
She said sellers claimed e-cigarettes were a tool to help people quit smoking, but the facts didn't prove it. Research shows that only 1.4% of Dutch adults regularly use e-cigarettes, but one in five still smokes.
