According to news from the American television station WLNS-TV on November 14, a new round of polls in Michigan, USA, showed that 81% of voters said they want to increase taxes on all tobacco products to curb more people’s use.
The poll of voters across the state found that 67% want to reduce tobacco use and ban flavored vaping products.
A Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids reports that $5.33 billion in medical expenditures in Michigan are attributable to smoking, resulting in $1.46 billion in Medicaid costs, costing an average family $1,140 in tax dollars. Smoking is also expected to have a negative economic impact, costing the state $11.5 in lost productivity.
A formal vote may take place in 2024.
