According to zeit news, the German Medical Association of North Rhine advocated a ban on disposable e-cigarettes at a meeting held in Dusseldorf, Germany on November 18.
The association points out that when e-cigarette oil is heated, it produces aerosols that may damage the heart and respiratory system, and may also cause respiratory diseases and allergies. Additionally, disposable e-cigarettes are often disposed of in regular trash rather than e-waste recycling bins. The resulting plastic, metal and lithium-ion batteries have caused serious environmental pollution.
The association calls for a speedy ban or at least restrictions on the production and sale of disposable e-cigarettes. According to the association report, sales of e-cigarettes and disposable e-cigarettes increased by 40% between 2021 and 2022.
Rudolf Henke, chairman of the association, said that the various shapes and bright colors of e-cigarettes mainly attract young consumers. He called on lawmakers to do a better job of protecting children, teenagers and pregnant women from the harms of second-hand smoke.
