Canada: Smoking among young people is falling at an unprecedented rate

The Canadian Tobacco and Nicotine Survey shows that between 2019 and 2020, smoking rates in specific age groups have dropped by 40%, from 13.3% to 8%.

This number is encouraging for Health Canada to achieve its smoking ban target (5% by 2035). In addition, this 5% target rate has been achieved among 15-19 year olds.

Concordia University Economics Professor CD Howe Institute Ian Irvine said: “The media’s selective coverage of e-cigarettes is shameful. The achievements of e-cigarettes in reducing harm and smoking cessation have been largely ignored by the media, and they have always been concerned about it. E-cigarettes are prevalent in these age groups. Howe emphasized that although smoking rates have been declining under the government’s tobacco policy, the real change occurred when e-cigarette products appeared.

"By 2013, the smoking rate for people aged 15-19 had dropped to 11%, that of people aged 20-24 had dropped to 18%, and that of people aged 25 and over had dropped to about 16%, and then a disruptive Technology has emerged-e-cigarettes." He explained: "Young people have switched from burning-based nicotine products to smokeless nicotine, mainly e-cigarettes. E-cigarettes are not without risks; aerosols contain toxins, and it is best for anyone not to Use it. Although we know that e-cigarettes are much less toxic, we don’t know its long-term health effects.

Although lifelong e-cigarette smoking is bad for the cardiovascular system, the sharp drop in the smoking rate among young people is indeed related to the increase in the use of liquid nicotine. "Interestingly, until a few years ago, Canada was still on the right track in reducing tobacco hazards (THR) and fully supported the use of e-cigarette products as tools to reduce tobacco hazards. However, when published on BMJ A paper concluded that: "This all changed when the number of e-cigarettes and smoking among young Canadians increased. "Clive Bates, a public health consultant and former director of the Action on Smoking and Health (ASH), pointed out at the time that the data in the BMJ paper was wrong, and sure enough, almost a year later, the journal published a correction.
