Gallup survey: Americans under 30 still prefer e-cigarettes instead of smoking

The latest Gallup survey on smoking and e-cigarettes shows that compared with smoking, young people are still more likely to use e-cigarettes. This trend was first noticed in the 2018 Gallup survey on smoking and e-cigarette trends. .

Considering the organized efforts in recent years to scare e-cigarette users away from this practice, this is encouraging for advocates of harm reduction.

Among Americans aged 18-29, 17% reported using e-cigarettes in the past week, while 14% reported smoking. Among people aged 30-49, only 5% smoke e-cigarettes, while 20% smoke. Among the 50-64 year olds, 19% smoked and only 2% smoked e-cigarettes.

Among all adults, 6% smoke e-cigarettes and 16% smoke. Men are more likely to smoke or smoke e-cigarettes than women.

In the 2019 Gallup survey-conducted just before the evalI outbreak, it caused panic about e-cigarettes-e-cigarette results showed that the e-cigarettes of each age group and combined group The smoke rate is 2-3 percentage points higher.

E-cigarettes and smoking are more common among low-income adults and adults with lower education levels. Among those with a household income of less than US$40,000, 28% smoke and 10% smoke e-cigarettes, but only those with an income between US$40,000 and US$99,999 smoke (12%) or smoke e-cigarettes ( 4%) about half of the people.

Compared with people with university education (13%, 5%) or university graduates (6%, 4%), people with a high school or lower degree smoke (28%) and e-cigarettes (10%) more frequently.

Among participants who claimed to be conservative, moderate, and free, the results of e-cigarette smoking were exactly the same: 6% of each group smoked e-cigarettes. But among smokers, there are more moderates (19%) or conservatives (14%) than liberals (11%).

The results of the Gallup survey in 2021 are based on a random sample of telephone interviews with just over 1,000 American adults completed from July 6 to 21. The results based on the entire sample have a margin of error of +/- 4 percentage points—enough to explain the small decline between 2018-19 and this year.

Gallup asked the survey participants whether they had smoked any cigarettes or any number of e-cigarettes. If their answer to smoking is yes, Gallup employees will ask more detailed questions about how many cigarettes they smoke a day, and no follow-up questions are asked to e-cigarette users.
