Researchers question the claim that e-cigarettes will change DNA

According to foreign news reports, a group of scientists reported that the use of e-cigarettes is related to DNA damage similar to smoking. However, researchers Caitlin Notley and Konstantinos Farsalinos, who were not involved in the study, discussed the limitations of the study in an article recently published on The Conversation.

This study recruited relatively few people, and they were not representative of the population. And it does not consider other lifestyle habits that may affect the measurement, such as drinking. Wrote a scientist with a background in public health and addiction research.

The DNA study published in Natural Science Reports compared the gene expression in the white blood cells of e-cigarettes with smokers and people without e-cigarettes or smoking history. Scientists at Keck School of Medicine in Los Angeles, California, discovered that in e-cigarettes and smokers, the expression of genes related to cellular respiration and immunity is dysregulated. However, compared with e-cigarettes, the number of affected genes in smokers is several times higher.

Research leader Professor Ahmad Besaratinia said: Our research investigated the biological effects of adult e-cigarette users using e-cigarettes for the first time, while taking into account their past smoking exposure. Our data shows that e-cigarettes are very similar to smoking and are related to mitochondrial gene disorders and the destruction of molecular pathways involved in immune and inflammatory responses, which control health and disease states.

Farsalinos and Notley pointed out that although the reported DNA changes may represent disease risk factors, the study did not measure any direct impact of e-cigarettes on disease prevalence. They warned that this may be misunderstood by the media and deviate from the benefits of using e-cigarettes as a tool to overcome tobacco addiction. It is irresponsible to report sensational headlines to the public based on complex studies, and these studies do not actually show any real-world harm. Especially compared with the huge health hazards of smoking.

On the other hand, according to Besaratinia, there is also evidence that e-cigarettes can be an entry point for nicotine consumption, especially among young people. "Given the prevalence of e-cigarettes among young non-smokers, our findings will have important implications for regulators," he said. "In order to protect public health, these institutions urgently need scientific evidence to provide information for the supervision of the manufacture, distribution and marketing of e-cigarettes."
