Anti-tobacco groups urge FDA to take action on pending e-cigarette PMTA applications
According to foreign reports, several anti-tobacco groups in the United States have sent a letter to the US Food and Drug Administration, urging the agency to take action on the marketing product application (PMTA) and push for the rejection of all flavored e-cigarette products.
It's been more than four months since the FDA was supposed to decide which vaping products can stay on the market, but the agency still hasn't completed some reviews, including some of the best-selling e-cigarettes.
“We are writing to urge the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to expedite decisions on agency-pending premarket tobacco product applications (PMTAs) involving flavored vaping products, including those with menthol flavoring, and based on the most Good existing scientific evidence to deny all pending applications for non-tobacco-flavored e-cigarettes to protect the nation's youth from the health hazards of these products," the letter said.
The letter was signed by the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Heart Association and the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, among others.
"Every day the FDA delays action, we have more children at risk," said MATthew Myers, president of the Campaign for Tobacco Free Kids. "While the FDA has ruled on many applications from small companies, it has not ruled on applications from larger companies whose products are used by most children."
Gregory Conley, president of the American Vaping Association, pointed out that data shows that youth e-cigarette use has been declining. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), e-cigarette use among middle and high school students declined from 2019 to 2020.
But even with the decline, the CDC said it "estimates that in 2021 more than 2 million U.S. middle and high school students will report current use of e-cigarettes.
