The survey shows that 49% of Malaysian smokers choose electronic cigarettes to quit smoking, and 52% think that the harm is low

A new survey on Malaysian smokers shows that nearly half or 49% of people choose to smoke e-cigarettes to reduce smoking or quit completely.

The survey was conducted by the International Research Institute Kantar group at the end of 2021. It summarized Malaysia's use and attitude towards e-cigarettes, tobacco products and cigarettes, and interviewed 500 people in the country.

"This seems to be consistent with more and more scientific evidence that smokers prefer e-cigarettes and can effectively help them quit this habit." Said Dr. Delon human, President and CEO of health laboratories.

"The available evidence so far shows that most smokers want to quit smoking. For example, in the UK, about two-thirds of smokers, regardless of their social group, want to quit smoking, and e-cigarettes have become the preferred method of quitting smoking." He said.

The survey also found that 52% of Malaysian smokers thought that the harm of electronic cigarette smoking was lower than that of smoking.

On this basis, 86% said that e-cigarettes should be provided to smokers as less harmful products, and 90% believed that e-cigarettes should be actively promoted as less harmful substitutes for smoking.

"Research on the use of e-cigarettes shows that smoking e-cigarettes is not without risks, but it is much less harmful than smoking. Interestingly, compared with other countries, Malaysian smokers have a high proportion of people who understand this fact." He said.

For example, public health in the UK reviewed the evidence in 2021 and pointed out that although the UK has adopted harm reduction methods to encourage smokers to switch to e-cigarettes, only 29% of British smokers believe that e-cigarettes are less harmful than smoking, Dr. Delong said.

The survey also assessed Malaysians' views on regulations and found that 60% of people were worried that electronic cigarette products were not regulated.

Most of them support the regulation of e-cigarettes and believe that they should be regulated as consumer products rather than pharmaceutical products and distributed by doctors.

At the same time, an overwhelming 81% believe that regulations must be formulated to ensure that products are free from defects and meet product and quality standards, and will not be sold to minors or minor children.

"This study shows that electronic cigarette sets in Malaysia have great potential to help the government reduce the smoking rate because they are a popular tool for smokers to reduce and quit smoking."

"As Malaysia is at the forefront of introducing laws to regulate e-cigarette products, it is important to strike a balance to ensure that measures will not prevent smokers from switching from smoking to less harmful alternatives, and ensure that minors and non-smokers do not use products."

Dr. Delong said: risk proportionate regulation is an appropriate way to achieve this balance by implementing correct controls and taking into account its potential to help reduce the smoking rate in Malaysia.
