Nearly £10 million of illegal vaping equipment has been seized in London, England, and the Independent Vape Trade Association (IBVTA) has called for more funding for trade standards and regulatory services.
All 33 London authorities are working together in a targeted "cost of living" operation to eliminate the sale of illegal e-cigarettes.
Gillian Golden, chief executive of IBVTA, said: “With limited resources, London Trading Standards has done an excellent job of removing illicit products from the market. Non-compliant vaping products are also associated with non-compliant sales, Often targeting underage consumers. Our members applaud any effort to combat this illicit trade, which unfairly discredits our industry.”
“The IBVTA will continue to assist and support Trade Standards and other agencies in providing intelligence and training to combat non-compliant products. We also urge vapers to stay away from illegal e-cigarettes sold by unscrupulous traders.”
As well as weeding out illegal products, officials across London are working with businesses to educate them about the importance of only stockpiling tested or compliant equipment. Where there is intelligence that e-cigarettes are being sold to minors, relevant law enforcement officers have made test purchases and taken enforcement action.
