World Vaping Alliance calls on Polish politicians to support vaping

The World Vapers' Alliance, a global vaping advocacy group, launched the #BackVapingBeatSmoking campaign in Washington to encourage Polish policymakers to embrace harm reduction and vaping.

As part of the #BackVapingBeatSmoking movement, the WVA conveyed the message to PIS representative Platforma Obywatelska that vaping could save 1 million lives in Poland and 19 million in Europe.

The WVA has presented their vaping product directive to demonstrate how vaping needs to be handled to achieve its full potential for public health. In addition, the WVA showcased an art installation in the shape of a fallen domino that moved across the Polish capital to draw attention to the importance of tobacco harm reduction.

“In Poland alone, more than a million smokers could switch to vaping if the government supports harm reduction. That means if politicians stop banning flavors, raising taxes and reducing nicotine levels in e-liquids , could save 1 million lives from tobacco-related diseases. In Poland, more than 70,000 people die from smoking every year, and this number will continue to grow if politicians do not change their approach to harm reduction.” Director of WVA Michael Randall said.

A partner of the World Federation of E-Cigarette Users is the Polish organization People's Law, which addresses civil liberties and the dangers of over-regulated markets for goods and services.

“We are joining forces with the World Federation of E-Cigarette Users to demand change from Polish politicians as the harm reduction situation has become very disturbing for consumers, businesses and civil society. The current government has recently increased taxes on e-liquids , but was unaware of the possible consequences for public health. We want a thorough analysis and extensive public debate before legislative action that interferes with the daily lives of Poles," said Sara Lament-Hamodi, coordinator of the Prawo dla ludzi campaign.

The Polish campaign is part of a broader #BackVapingBeatSmokin campaign launched by the group in Strasbourg last week. The WVA staged a protest art installation with a message not to kill 19 million people in front of the European Parliament to draw attention from EU policymakers to the need for harm reduction across Europe.

In the coming weeks, WVA will be hosting similar installations in the Czech Republic, Italy, Portugal and Belgium. The group is also launching a Europe-wide petition asking EU policymakers to recognise e-cigarettes as a mechanism for reducing tobacco harm and to avoid over-regulating the most successful smoking cessation aid in an upcoming review of EU tobacco regulation. The petition will be submitted to the European Parliament in Brussels in November.

“Earlier this year, more than 24,000 EU citizens gave their views at the Commission’s public consultation on tobacco legislation, asking regulators not to ban e-cigarettes. Public bodies must listen to consumers. 5% of Polish adults People are vaping users, it's time to hear their voices!" Randall added.
