Senegalese oncologist: Harm reduction products such as e-cigarettes can reduce cancer cases by 30%

Harm reduction has been described as a powerful public health tool capable of reducing cancer cases in Africa by 30%.

Professor Abdoul Kassé, renowned oncologist and professor of surgery at the Institute of Cancer Research in Senegal, revealed this at the 2nd Harm Reduction Communication for African Journalists in Nairobi, Kenya, saying that harm reduction should be a central developmental strategy for all public health. The tool has already benefited many in public health, he said.

"It applies to areas where there is a need to reduce harm associated with society's practice or consumption of substances that overuse and increase morbidity and mortality. Innovative harm reduction initiatives will help keep more Africans alive. Tobacco Harm Reduction Initiatives, including the use of popular e-cigarettes, nicotine patches, and chewing gum, continue to generate much misunderstanding in the public health community and in the media."

"However, evidence suggests that for those who are unwilling or unable to quit smoking with currently approved methods, using less harmful alternatives to cigarettes may be a solution and may not necessarily be best for everyone , but much better than continuing to smoke.”

Dr Tendai Mhizha, Head of Integra Africa, highlighted the role journalists and media outlets need to play in tackling misinformation and disinformation in tobacco harm reduction discourse that effectively perpetuates the death and disease caused by continued smoking of combustible cigarettes.

“There is a lot of disinformation surrounding the topic of nicotine and the alleged negative impact of vaping on public health. This leads to policies that are not conducive to reduced-risk products and narratives that completely deny their benefits.”

“The media has a huge responsibility to curb the scourge of misinformation and misinformation about harm reduction, as dictated by other socio-political positions that do not uphold consumers’ rights to choose healthier lifestyles,” said Dr. Mhizha.

The meeting focused on alternative ways to reduce harm for tobacco smokers. Themed Harm Reduction: Changing Africa, the conference will focus on progress made through harm reduction strategies in all areas related to public health, such as drug and alcohol abuse, excess sugar intake, skin lightening and other addictive and addictive diseases .

Various harm reduction strategies and initiatives aimed at reducing unnecessary deaths from noncommunicable diseases are presented and discussed.
