New Zealand: More than 300 vaping products removed from shelves, 1,800 more under review
The vaping regulator has found some vaping products contain too much nicotine after questions from Fair Go prompted a review.
1News reports that the regulator has looked at more than 8,000 products for sale here and "for the majority of the products reviewed, no issues were found, although in some cases information from manufacturers or importers indicated they may contain Prohibited ingredients, or their nicotine salt levels may exceed the legal limit," Vaping Regulatory Agency manager Matthew Burgess said.
"Following a review, the regulator has withdrawn the authorization of 340 vaping products, meaning they can no longer be legally sold in New Zealand. We will shortly publish a list of products that are no longer licensed on the Ministry of Health website."
At the same time, there are still as many as 1,800 e-cigarette products that may be removed from the shelves. Authorities are working with companies that make or sell them and are asking for more information from them by next week.
It comes after Fair Go began an investigation into the illegal sale of e-cigarettes to underage customers, after it disclosed that a 14-year-old mystery shopper with no ID was shown that e-cigarettes could be purchased over the counter.
Fair Go has since been investigating confusing e-cigarette labels and the nicotine levels of some of them.
Some manufacturers and importers appear to have been selling e-cigarettes containing nicotine salts, which contain up to 80 percent more nicotine than legally allowed.
Proponents of high-intensity e-cigarettes argue they are closer to the smoking experience, which they say is crucial to getting smokers to quit.
Advocates of tighter controls say the vaping here is too potent and addictive, especially for younger vapers who haven't yet smoked.
