Working with the North East Trading Standards Association, Trading Standards teams from across the North East have removed thousands of non-compliant vaping products from shelves. A total of 1.4 tonnes of illicit disposable vaping products seized from retailers have been sent for destruction over the past six months of operations.

All tobacco products, e-cigarettes and vaping products must comply with strict tobacco control laws, including limits on nicotine content and can size. Some of the products seized were in tanks up to seven times the legal limit and were incorrectly labeled, with equipment missing health warnings, batch details and hazard warnings.

Vaping devices must also display details of a UK manufacturer or importer who can be contacted in the event of a safety concern. A large number of single-use e-cigarettes seized are not approved for sale in the UK.

Much of the work carried out by the Northeast Trading Standards Institute has been driven by consumer concerns about the sale of vaping devices to children. In March, 44% of Trading Standards’ test purchases of 32 retailers sold vaping devices to underage volunteers.

Ian Harrison, representing the North East Trading Standards Association, said:

"E-cigarettes pose a fraction of the risks of smoking, which kills two-thirds of lifetime smokers, yet the number of vaping devices seized under trade standards demonstrates the scale of non-compliant products on the market. Consumers in Caution should be exercised when purchasing vaping products, and reputable vaping stores are always the best choice for those who want to use vaping to quit smoking.”

"Trading standards will continue to play a role in ensuring the vaping market is regulated and reassures consumers."

John Herriman, Chief Executive of the Chartered Trading Standards Institute, said:

"While we recognize that e-cigarettes may help smokers quit, we are concerned that there appears to be an increase in violations of the law and that many non-compliant products are being sold. There is also an increasing problem with the sale of e-cigarette products to children, which It has aroused widespread public concern.”

"The Trading Standards team is doing important work to crack down on unscrupulous retailers who sell these products to young people without the age verification checks required by law. It is important that vaping products comply with the regulations set in place to protect public health. rules, and they do not fall into the hands of children."

Vaping devices and e-cigarettes must be approved by the Medicines and Healthcare Regulatory Agency (MHRA) before they can be sold. Compliant disposable e-cigarettes have a maximum volume of 2ml and a maximum nicotine concentration of 20mg/ml or 2%. Vaping devices are age-restricted products and it is illegal to sell vaping devices to anyone under the age of 18.
