Australian Medical Association calls for stronger regulation of vaping products

Australian Medical Association AMA members are concerned about the harmful effects of vaping, including seizures, nicotine toxicity and problems with brain development.

The AMA Federal Committee has acted on members' concerns about the health risks of vaping.

At its meeting earlier this month, the Federal Council adopted a motion calling for stronger regulatory measures to curb the proliferation of recreational non-nicotine vaping products, including but not limited to:

Implement similar regulations for tobacco products, such as health warnings, better labelling, plain packaging and tobacco licences.

A targeted federal response to detect and take action on illegal advertising and promotion of vaping products, especially online and on social media.

Better enforcement of existing state and territory regulations to help stop the sale of illicit e-cigarettes online and through storefronts.

The motion clarifies the AMA's position on non-nicotine vaping products and adds to the AMA's position and ongoing advocacy for all vaping products. It will build on the AMA's existing position on the medical model for nicotine vaping products and will be reflected in our response to the Therapeutic Goods Administration's consultation on proposed reforms to the regulation of nicotine vaping products.

Non-nicotine vaping products are legally sold in stores and online to people over the age of 18. However, many of these products do contain nicotine, misleading customers into an addictive product. Despite existing laws, it is easy for people under the age of 18 to buy nicotine and non-nicotine vaping products illegally.

E-cigarette products are clearly aimed at children and come in a variety of flavors, such as fruit, lollipop and dessert flavors, in brightly colored packaging similar to popular juice boxes or lollipops.

Known acute health effects of vaping products include seizures, nicotine poisoning and brain development problems associated with young people, vaping or vaping-associated lung injury (EVALI), burns, coughing, dizziness and nausea.

There has been an increase in vaping-related calls to the Australian Poisons Information Centre, with most of the calls being about children. Evidence shows that e-cigarettes make smoking traditional cigarettes three times more likely, making them a gateway to smoking.

The AMA will continue to advocate on this issue to stem the rapid growth in the use of harmful vaping products.
