The Latvian parliament passed the amendments in the second reading on March 23, planning to ban the sale of tobacco products, alternative products, plant-based smoking products, electronic smoking devices and refills to persons under the age of 20.
Seventy-nine members voted in favor of the amendment and six voted against it.
Parliamentary amendments to the law still need support in the third, or final, reading for the ban to take effect.
Currently, tobacco and alternative products are available to 18-year-olds.
The legal amendment also prohibits the sale of vaping device liquids and flavored alternative tobacco products.
At the same time, it plans to restrict the production and sale of tobacco products, alternative tobacco products or electronic smoking devices that look like candy, snacks and toys.
Inga Bērziņa, chairman of the Social and Labor Affairs Committee, previously said that money from the trade in smoking products could not be more important than human health and lives. In her assessment, it is particularly important to look after the health of vulnerable groups – children and young people – by minimizing the perceived appeal of smoking products to them.
The majority of Saeima also supported a proposal submitted by the opposition representative Armands Krauze (Green Farmers Alliance), which would ban smoking in Saeima and in the Cabinet building.
