U.S. Senator Schumer calls on FDA to investigate and shut down e-cigarette brand Elf Bar

Harper Ells is a junior at G. Ray Bodley High School in Fulton, United States. She said e-cigarette use was common among students.

"They usually hide it pretty well," Els said. "They try not to do it in class. That's why they're always in the bathroom."

She tries to avoid meeting her peers who vape in the bathroom, which means she may have to vape on the other side of the building.

"If they're doing random bathroom checks, there's a chance you can connect with them, be in that group. There's also a chance they're pressurizing me one time I want to go to the bathroom. You really don't know," Els explained road.

From September to March, there were 88 vaping incidents in Fulton, 62 of which involved Elf Bar, a vaping brand from China.

Senator Chuck Schumer said the brand targets kids on social media sites like TikTok and Instagram, using influencers and packaging with flavors like cotton candy. The senator said the sprite bar had 1.7 billion views on TikTok alone.

This isn't just Fulton's problem, so Schumer is writing to the FDA asking them to investigate Elf Bar.

“It’s an advertising model that works around disposable e-cigarettes to see if they break the law and shut them down,” Schumer explained. "The bottom line is clear, we want the FDA to shut down the Elf bar before it becomes Juul 2.0."

Police are working with the school and regularly check shops.

Fulton Police Chief Michael Curtis said: "We will conduct compliance inspections of vape shops to ensure that they are not selling items that are prohibited in New York State or to minors.

Chief Curtis said they have made and will continue to apprehend those who purchase merchandise for minors.
