The scale of single-use e-cigarette pollution in Scotland is mind-boggling.
Volunteers picked up hundreds of vaping pens last week on a beach in the small town of Irvine in Ayrshire, as local media reported.
Locals estimate they collected at least 500, including 150 in 24 hours over the weekend. This is just a microcosm of the country - now imagine the toll from vaping and other litter on every beach, park, green space and scenic spot in Scotland. We all know the weather is great and people are enjoying it, which is what they should be doing.
But there is simply no reason for tourists to leave a place as beautiful as Irvine Beach.
Nasty single-use plastic e-cigarettes contain harmful substances such as lithium batteries, e-fluids and wires, and pose a real threat to marine wildlife.
So we strongly urge those basking on our beautiful coastlines this week to be considerate of local residents and local creatures - take your rubbish and vapes with you. It's not difficult - and it could save volunteers and council staff countless hours of cleaning up after you.
However, the horrifying amount of single-use vaping waste we see every day will now only reinforce the need to ban these needlessly polluting devices. We've been campaigning for the Scottish Government since January, calling for a ban on single-use electronics.
The results of Holyrood's review of the product, including a possible ban, are expected by the end of the month.
