The Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA), Australia's Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA), has issued 38 infringement notices totaling A$588,840 to four Sydney-based entities for the alleged importation of 22 consignments containing a total of 379,600 nicotine vaping products.
It is alleged that TSG Liverpool Street Pty Ltd, TSG Balmain Pty Ltd, TSG Chatswood Pty Ltd and Jaradat & Sabbagh Group Pty Ltd attempted to import nicotine vaping products (prescription medicines) that were not registered with the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods and did not meet the relevant standards.
TGA Laboratories tested samples of imported IGET, GUNPOD and HQD brand disposable e-cigarettes and found they contained prohibited ingredients listed in the Therapeutic Goods Directive (Standard for Nicotine Vaping Products) (TGO 110) Directive 2021.
Nicotine vaping products containing prohibited ingredients pose a significant risk to public health.
Unapproved nicotine vaping products have been seized by Australian Border Force and will be seized and destroyed on TGA advice.
Unregulated nicotine vaping products are a growing concern in the Australian community due to their increased availability and use, particularly among adolescents and young adults, with associated health risks including nicotine addiction, nicotine poisoning, exposure to toxins, and serious injury and burns.
On 2 May 2023, the Minister of Health and Aged Care announced that the Australian Government is taking strong action against the supply of illegal vaping products.
