According to the Italian news website sigmagazine, at the meeting of the Italian Tobacco Retailers Federation (Fit), Mario Antonelli, President of the Italian Tobacco Federation, gave a comprehensive analysis of the tobacco industry in the 21st century. Antonelli said that Fit supports the government's ban on remote sales of e-cigarettes, and said that if sellers do not recycle disposable products, they will face administrative penalties, and improper recycling will face criminal penalties.
Antonelli also discusses e-cigarettes extensively, a tobacco product that, despite initial skepticism, has grown over the years with e-cigarette proponents gaining prominence to the point that small industry associations that initially supported the spread of vaping are now joining in Got Fit.
Call for stricter regulations on e-cigarettes
According to Antonelli, stores specializing in the sale of e-cigarettes are gradually being replaced by tobacco retail outlets.
Antonelli believes that the current market is divided into three distribution channels, namely e-cigarette specialty stores, online stores and tobacco retail stores.
Despite fierce competition, tobacco retail stores are still the preferred purchase location for about 60% of e-cigarette consumers. He believes retailers need to remain professional and constantly learning and developing the market, while also defending physical sales channels, which are currently being compromised by illicit online channels.
"Online sales leave too many loopholes, and it's time for lawmakers to act to protect legality and public health, especially minors, and close those loopholes."
He also said that 40% of users buy illegal products online. It is now increasingly difficult to curb online channels, as Italian regulators themselves have admitted, with Antonelli supporting a ban on distance selling on behalf of the federation.
"We will propose and support a ban on distance selling in various Italian and European institutions."
He said the measure was now necessary to protect consumers and the physical sales network. For example, he said that if minors can freely purchase more than the prescribed nicotine products through the Internet, then it is meaningless to strictly limit the nicotine content in e-liquid.
Strengthen the recycling of disposable electronic cigarette equipment and establish criminal penalties
Antonelli also expressed his views on disposable products. He believes that this category has already occupied an important share of the market.
He pledged that tobacco retailers with physical sales networks would become recycling points for discarded vaping equipment.
"We have partnered with a large distributor, Logista, and also with the Italian Ministry of Environment and Electronic Safety. Our physical network will be a model for the proper disposal of waste products and an effective demonstration of the circular economy. Selling these products also means taking part in the disposal responsibility. "
Antonelli hopes to reach an agreement in the next few days to minimize administrative formalities and costs related to processing.
He believes that the agreement reached will be in the interest of all.
"If you don't recycle, you will face administrative penalties, and if you don't recycle properly, you will face criminal penalties."
Given that e-cigarettes do not have a fixed price like traditional tobacco, he also called on colleagues to:
"We are ready to support sustainability with practical actions, because it also means that we will give 'core' value to our physical sales network."
