On July 27, the Australian Guardian reported that law enforcement officers in Melbourne, Australia, seized more than 25000 illegal Electronic cigarette in a shop in the city center. The law enforcement department emphasized that this move aims to send a "clear message" to other stores.
The Victorian police said that more than 25000 nicotine Electronic cigarette oils and 2500 packs of illegal tobacco cigarettes were seized during a raid on an enterprise in Swanston Street. The police stated that these items are worth approximately 800000 Australian dollars.
Sheriff Matt Jerabek stated:
We will continue to focus on actively combating this activity
This law enforcement action was carried out following the large-scale statewide crackdown in South Australia. In the first four days since July, 1200 Electronic cigarette oils suspected of containing nicotine were taken from store shelves.
However, public health experts said that if there were no stricter border control, stores would continue to sell illegal nicotine Electronic cigarette products for teenagers.
In April, the federal government promised to crack down on the black market of Electronic cigarette through import control and prohibition of over the counter Electronic cigarette, but it has not yet announced when to implement these reforms.
