According to Arab News, Hany Aman, CEO of Eastern Tobacco, Egypt's largest cigarette maker, said that Egyptians use about 100 billion cigarettes a year, accounting for about 18 percent of the country's population. This is equivalent to smoking 1,000 cigarettes per year for each of Egypt's 100 million people (men, women and children), or 3 cigarettes per day.
Demand surges, prices skyrocket
The demand for cigarettes in Egypt is growing rapidly, and consumers speculate that a new tax policy will be introduced soon. Since June, the price of Egyptian domestic cigarettes has risen from EGP 24 to EGP 60. Eastern Tobacco, a domestic cigarette manufacturer in Egypt, has an annual output of 70 billion sticks and a market share of about 75% in Egypt.
To alleviate shortages, increase production
To alleviate tobacco shortages, Eastern Tobacco has recently increased cigarette production, Oman said. He urged consumers not to buy more than they actually need and to avoid hoarding, and said prices would return to normal within 3 to 4 weeks.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), about 80% of the world's 1.3 billion tobacco users live in low- and middle-income countries. Tobacco use is estimated to kill 8 million people each year, 1.2 million of them from exposure to second-hand smoke.
