According to Corse Martins on September 27th, the last French cigarette factory (Macotab) will close in December. The tobacco factory is located in Furiani (Upper Corsica Province).
It is understood that the factory produces approximately 850 million cigarettes annually. This decision is due to the continuous decline in legal sales of French cigarettes in the context of the "restructuring of certain businesses in Europe" project, which has been replaced by smuggled and counterfeit goods. Meanwhile, Philip Morris terminated some of its production contracts with Macotab, ultimately leading to the decision to close the company. For the same reason, the Coretab packaging plant's project in Reunion is also under closure plan.
The Macotab cigarette factory is the last cigarette manufacturing plant in France since the closure of the Riom factory in 2016, with only 29 employees in a 10000 square meter production area. Currently, most cigarette production in Europe is concentrated in Germany and Poland.
The Macotab factory, established in 1961, is under the Seita (Tobacco and Matches Industrial Development Company) group, a privatized French tobacco monopoly that has been a subsidiary of the Imperial Brands group since 1995 and produces cigarettes for Corsica and other regions of France.
