According to Buzz news on October 10, in Ireland’s 2024 budget, cigarette prices will be increased, and e-cigarette products will be taxed starting in 2025. Irish Finance Minister Michael McGrath confirmed the price increase but revealed there would be no changes to alcohol prices.
McGrath told the congress that the total budget in 2024 will reach 14 billion euros. The budget increases cigarette tax by 75 cents, raising the price of the most popular cigarette pack to 16.75 euros. Other tobacco products will also rise proportionally. This is the eighth consecutive year that cigarette taxes have been increased, but this increase is the largest in that period. Over the past seven years, the cigarette tax has been increased by 50 euro cents per pack of 20 cigarettes.
The Irish Heart Foundation (IHF) believes the latest cigarette tax increase does not go far enough. The medical charity this month called for an increase in cigarette tax by €2.10 per year for the next two years. In this way, the IHF hopes to raise the price of a pack of cigarettes to 20 euros by 2025 to combat the growing number of young people smoking.
McGrath also announced that the 2025 Budget will impose domestic taxes on e-cigarette products.
Previously, the charity's 2024 budget proposal also included increasing the price of e-cigarette juice, but not unduly punishing people who use e-cigarettes as a method to quit smoking. "Disposable e-cigarettes cost nearly 8 euros. For young people, the cost of using e-cigarettes is almost half that of smoking." Charity sources said.
But McGrath told the House of Representatives at the time of the budget announcement that "a significant amount of preparatory work was required by my department and the tax department in drafting this legislation".
The Irish Heart Foundation has proposed increasing the tax on e-cigarette oil by 10 cents per milliliter. This means that the price of disposable e-cigarettes will usually increase by 25%, or 2 euros per e-cigarette.
