According to news from Dutch media rtlnieuws on the evening of October 26, the Dutch House of Representatives has asked the outgoing cabinet to formulate a law regulating e-cigarette consumption tax before next summer vacation.
The government said it supported such a consumption tax because such plans in Europe would take a long time to implement. But the Cabinet believes that specific requests from the House of Representatives are necessary given its own outgoing status.
A majority of members of the House of Representatives believe that the Netherlands should have implemented such a consumption tax long before Europe introduced relevant plans. The Dutch 66 party's motion will not go to a vote until later tonight, but the call's signatories already have a majority.
During question period last week, outgoing state secretary for public health Maarten van Ooijen said he could only abandon his "outgoing humility and restraint" if the House of Representatives explicitly called for such a tax. .
Even if the cabinet now has the opportunity to start imposing such a consumption tax, it will still take quite a long time to collect the consumption tax, and it will not be until 2025 at the earliest.
