Hundreds of e-cigarette companies urge FedEx to revoke transportation ban

On July 13, according to foreign news reports, the owners of more than 400 independent e-cigarette companies in the United States signed a letter urging FedEx to reconsider its decision to ban the transportation of e-cigarette products. The signers include e-liquid manufacturers and e-cigarettes. Product distributors and e-cigarette shops of all sizes. With the final postal service rules that will prohibit the U.S. Postal Service from sending e-cigarette products, many e-cigarette retailers and their customers face an uncertain future. If there are no major shippers in the country who are willing to provide e-cigarette products, many e-cigarette users will not be able to obtain the products they need. The letter to FedEx CEO Frederick W. Smith was organized by Gregory Conley, President of the American Electronic Cigarette Association (AVA). As explained by Conley and small business owners, FedEx has decided to no longer provide legal e-cigarette products, which is a huge competitive advantage for tobacco companies that sell e-cigarette devices mainly through convenience stores and gas stations.

Soon, there will be a large area of the country with almost no access to e-cigarette products. Tobacco companies that sell e-cigarettes use the same proprietary channels that distribute cigarettes to retailers. But small e-cigarette stores rely on the postal service or public operators such as FedEx and UPS to get orders from distributors and manufacturers.

FedEx is causing great harm to American small businesses and consumers," Conley said in a press release. "They hit the big tobacco company's goal, and the big tobacco company directly benefits from policies that make it more expensive for adult smokers to change cigarettes.

Shortly after Congress passed the "Preventing Online Sales of Electronic Cigarettes to Children Act" in December last year-the law instructed the U.S. Postal Service to prohibit the U.S. Postal Service from delivering e-cigarettes and forcing online e-cigarette sellers to comply with the PACT Act-the main private delivery service Express), UPS and DHL) also chose to stop shipping e-cigarette products.

Although some private operators have developed partial solutions to the e-cigarette mail ban, most of them are limited to densely populated areas and are more expensive and slower than large public operators such as Postal Service or FedEx. Soon, there will be a large area of the country with almost no access to e-cigarette products.

Without reliable delivery options from operators with a wide range of coverage, e-cigarette users in rural and remote areas will not have many choices. "If there is no option to order e-cigarette products wholesale or ship products to consumers, e-cigarette shops have seen their transportation options soar or disappear completely," the AVA letter said. "If consumers cannot obtain or afford these lower-risk alternatives to cigarettes, they will be forced to switch to combustible tobacco, which is more dangerous and will have a lifelong impact on their health.

Business owners point out that marginalized communities like LGBTQ and black Americans will be the first to be affected by restrictions on e-cigarette transportation. FedEx’s policies will lead to more smoking, more diseases and more deaths, and these people have disproportionately suffered from smoking-related diseases.

Rural e-cigarette users and smokers will also feel the effects of the FedEx ban. Many Western and Midwestern states are sparsely populated and cannot be reached through the new private delivery network. Without reliable delivery options from operators with a wide range of coverage, e-cigarette users in rural and remote areas will not have many choices. Many people will simply shrug their shoulders and then return to cigarettes.
