UK will try out e-cigarette vending machines to sell e-cigarettes

Digital identity technology company 1account has launched an e-cigarette vending machine in the UK, which will be launched in supermarkets this spring.

The first machines have been installed at the Leicester branch of e-cigarette retailer Ecigwizard as part of a 12-month trial, with the company revealing that they will also appear in household-name grocery retailers.

To purchase products from the machine, customers must download the 1account app, upload ID to prove age and take a selfie. This information is then validated across multiple data points, including phone records. Then select the desired product, then open the app and scan the QR code on the machine and make a card payment to distribute it.

1account founder and CEO Ben Keirle told the media that the use of vending machines to sell consumer goods has increased significantly in recent years as retailers better understand the needs of modern consumers.

"This pilot project with Ecigwizard and future trial partners aims to assess whether the sale of age-restricted goods can be part of the ongoing expansion of a new generation of smart vending machines to ensure that age-restricted products are not accessible to children."

The trial was approved by Bucks & Surrey Trading Standards, including high street retail stores, NHS locations and pubs. In the first trial, the 1account software was initially integrated into machines made by London-based vending machine maker Aeguana.

1account aims to roll out its ID technology in stores that sell restricted products (e.g. alcohol, knives) and in establishments that require ID. The company has also participated in a Home Office sandbox test, in which grocers such as Tesco, ALDi, Asda, Co-op and Morrisons are participating, using technology to approve alcohol sales.

“Today, adult customers have more choices than ever where they buy vaping products, including specialty vaping retail stores, supermarkets, convenience stores, online and now vending machines,” Keirle added.

"The new generation of machines, combined with our leading digital ID technology, provides adults with more opportunities to use vaping products, which the government stipulates are at least 95% less harmful than traditional cigarettes, while also preventing 18-year-olds from The following children master vaping devices and e-liquids," he added.

John Dunn, Director General of the British Vaping Industry Association, added: "The advent of vending machines is another example of the innovative spirit of the industry and will support more smokers to successfully transition from traditional cigarettes to a much less harmful one. of vaping products, and at the same time boosting the retail economy.

“Today, there are approximately 2.4 million former adult smokers due to the complete switch to e-cigarettes, and relatively low rates of smoking among under-18s. Digital ID technology built into vending machines will help ensure that both trends continue ."
