Hertfordshire No Smoking Day takes place on 9 March 2022, so to mark this day and to help smokers who want to quit, Hertfordshire Council (HCC) is offering a message to over 18s who have tried unsuccessfully to quit but A free e-cigarette starter kit is available for adults who are ready.

Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, more people are asking HCC for smoking cessation support, and since April 2020, more than 4,300 people have received help, more than half of whom have quit smoking permanently.

Stevenage resident Luke French, 38, came forward in 2020 to seek support from HCC Health Improvement Services after more than 20 years of smoking.

"My mom died of COPD in December 2019," he explained. "After that, the kids were really scared of me smoking and they said Dad, you're going to die like grandma."

"Then there was COVID-19, which is also a respiratory illness, so I called the doctor and she referred me for support."

With help, Luke managed to cut back on smoking, but he was still struggling to set a quit day, so his quit counselor suggested he try e-cigarettes.

“With e-cigarettes, I found it really easy,” he said, and I have since stopped craving cigarettes and am gradually reducing the nicotine intensity. I wish I had used it years ago.

Two days after quitting, Luke felt better, with clearer lungs and more energy. "I feel more positive, my kids are happier, they don't worry about me dying from smoking anymore," he said.

"To everyone who is thinking about quitting smoking or is trying to quit smoking, I would say get an e-cigarette now."

With more than 100,000 adults smoking in Hertfordshire, it remains the largest cause of chronic disease in Hertfordshire, killing more than 1,400 people in the county each year.

Hertfordshire Public Health and Community Safety Executive Maurice Bright MBE said: "We want to empower Hertfordshire residents to lead healthy lifestyles and give them the opportunity to live a good life.

“Compared to tobacco, e-cigarettes are much less harmful to health and have the potential to help smokers quit. By adding the starter kit to other quit methods available through our quit service, we will help those who want to quit smoking residents to provide the best possible support.”
