Survey finds 71% of Scots are concerned about environmental impact of disposable e-cigarettes

More than seven in 10 Scots are concerned about the ecological impact of single-use e-cigarettes, research shows.

The UK Scotland Asthma and Lung poll results were released amid a new campaign to outlaw single-use devices, a growing litter threat.

The Opinion Matters survey of 1,000 Scots revealed that more than a quarter (27%) are very concerned about the environmental damage caused by disposable e-cigarettes. Another 44 percent said they were very concerned, for a total of 71 percent.

The inquiry campaign was launched last week to highlight the scale of hazardous waste and litter generated by single-use e-cigarettes, which tells how 1.3 million devices are discarded in the UK every week - two every second. Following our report, the Scottish government reviewed the product and vowed to consider a ban.

Greens MSP Gillian Mackay, who introduced the ban campaign in parliament last week, said: "This poll is a tribute to the excellent campaign work of the Daily Record and many others who have pushed this issue up the public health agenda.

"The vast majority of people in Scotland are fed up with disposable e-cigarettes littering their streets and polluting their neighbourhoods. It's time for action."

"There's no way to justify their sales, especially when so much of their marketing is clearly targeting children. We're living in a climate emergency and the waste they generate is ridiculous. They're in line with our vision of building a low-income country Efforts are incompatible.”

Joseph Carter, head of Asthma and Lung, Scotland UK, said: "We are concerned about the environmental impact of single-use e-cigarettes. We welcome the debate on this issue, especially as our own poll shows that 71% of people say they are concerned about the environmental waste caused by disposable vaping products.

But he added: "We are also mindful of the fact that e-cigarettes are a proven and effective smoking cessation tool and have recently been found to be more effective than traditional nicotine replacement therapy.

The group's poll was conducted between December 22 and January 3, before the SNP government announced its review. Activists have repeatedly stressed that their ban is not against vaping in general, but instead focuses on single-use devices — emphasizing how users choose rechargeable brands.

Scottish campaigner Laura Young, who has worked tirelessly to raise awareness of the disposable vaping waste crisis and has been dubbed a vape fighter - welcomed the poll results. She said: "There is a huge consensus that these items are causing enormous problems for our environment.

"Not only do they turn into litter, they also generate more single-use plastic waste, discard valuable earth resources such as lithium batteries, and risk fires in waste facilities. This will certainly drive the movement of the Scottish government to ban these devices — it reflects what I hear every day from ordinary people.”

Barry Fisher, chief executive of Keep Scotland Beautiful, said: "We are all too aware of the negative impact single-use e-cigarettes have on our community, so these figures are not surprising. We shouldn't be introducing new types like disposable e-cigarettes and e-cigarettes at a time when we're looking forward to introducing a deposit-back system that helps with certain types of waste.

Catherine Gemmell, marine conservation officer for Scotland, said: "These poll results reflect our own concerns about the impact of single-use e-cigarettes on the marine environment.

“Many of our volunteers have found disposable e-cigarettes on beaches and in trash picks inland. The littering of disposable e-cigarettes not only contributes to plastic pollution, but also leaks toxic chemicals into our oceans.”

Sheila Duffy, chief executive of anti-smoking charity ASH Scotland, said: "The escalation of single-use e-cigarettes being thrown away or ending up in landfill is clearly a major problem as these health-threatening products are designed for Designed for single or short-term use.

“The market size has grown exponentially over the past 12 months and has been driven by cheap sweetened, brightly colored disposable e-cigarettes favored by young people.”

But the UK Vaping Industry Association said a ban was the wrong choice and instead there needed to be a fit-for-purpose recycling solution.
